Other People’s Children

About the Film

Rachel is 40 years old, with no children. She loves her life: her high school students, her friends, her ex, her guitar lessons. When she falls in love with Ali, she becomes attached to Leila, his 4-year-old daughter. She tucks her in bed, cares for her, loves her like her own. But to love other people’s children is risky.

Having made its world premiere at the main competition of the 2022 Venice Film Festival, Other People’s Children was motivated by Zlotowski, among the most original directors of French cinema, setting out to “make a film she wanted to watch herself”. Featuring a nuanced and elegant performance by Virginie Efira, the film brings to the foreground a character who usually remains an extra or a minor character in most films. Starting out as a light romantic comedy and impressively involving the spectator in the main character’s emotional state, the film is also significant for showing that some of the dilemmas met by women in daily life have not been discussed by the male-dominated cinema for decades.
