About the Film
Sol spends the day at her grandfather’s home, helping her aunts Nuri and Alejandra for a surprise party they are throwing for Sol’s father, Tonatiuh. As daylight fades, a strange and chaotic atmosphere takes over, shattering the bonds that hold a family together.
In Totem, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, where it was among the highlights, Mexican director Lila Avilés looks at a family through the eyes of their seven-year-old daughter Sol. Delivering profound observations on death, loss and life through a natural progression and sophisticated characters, Totem touchingly depicts the way Sol relates to the family members, as well as to nature. Avilés’s second film after The Chambermaid, Totem is among the most impressive recent films on the theme of family.
